My mom tells me that my very first movie was Disney’s Lady and the Tramp. Seems as though she made the perfect choice for my first ever movie as it bestowed upon humanity one of the most iconic food moments in movie history: the infamous Spaghetti Kiss. A word to the wise, do not attempt this stunt. It is just not as cute or graceful in real life, and with the advent of social media, those pics are going to haunt you forever.
I do not remember watching Lady and the Tramp for the first time, but my mom remembers showing it to me; a special moment for any mother I am sure imagining what could that little 2-year-old brain possibly be thinking. I have loads of memories tied to movies, and the simple utterance of certain titles brings those moments, both big and small, flooding back to my mind. I can't even count the number of hours my sisters and I spent trying to recreate Ariel's hair flip in the pool from The Little Mermaid. Whenever any of the Toy Story movies are on TV, I suddenly feel that same pang of butterflies I felt on my first "date." I cringe remembering how embarrassed I felt to discover during Million Dollar Baby that I am not capable of swallowing sobs silently; or how laughing [way too hard] during the pageant dance scene in Little Miss Sunshine earned me a sharp elbow to the ribs. Then there are more powerful emotions movies can make one feel, like the shared reflection during the silence as the credits rolled at the end of the currently nominated Spotlight; or the moment something a character says in a movie really resonates with you and becomes a life truth for you, "Life is like a box of chocolates." Both film and food appeal to all of our senses, tugging at our stores of emotions and memories. They are both magical to me in that way.
In honor of the Oscars and film throughout history, I am paying homage to the classic duo of movies and popcorn with today’s recipes. The Garlicky Parmesan Popcorn has a nice savory punch, and the Peanut Butter Cup Popcorn satisfies my salty-sweet desires. Now that I have planned your dinner for you (popcorn is a full meal right?), there is only one question that still stands: Will this finally be Leo’s year?
